Bruce Austin Kirkpatrick



Bruce Austin Kirkpatrick of Laurinburg, formerly of Edison, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 3, 2018.

Bruce was born May 7, 1940 in Plainfield, NJ, a son of the late Samuel and Mae Cunningham Kirkpatrick. He entered the United States Army after graduating high school to proudly serve his country. During his stateside tour, he met the love of his life, Nell Rose Graham. After leaving the Army, Bruce and Nell continued their long distance love while he attended Marietta College. They married April 4, 1964 and began their life together in his hometown of Edison, NJ.

Bruce began his professional career as a Real Estate Agent and Life Insurance Broker. He briefly worked for his father at Samuel Kirkpatrick Insurance to gain the experience to open his own agency, Bruce Kirkpatrick Insurance Agency, Inc. where he and his beloved wife worked side-by-side for 23 ½ years. He also opened Oak Tree Valley Garden Center, where the entire family worked at one time. Bruce was a member and past president of Kiwanis. He continued his public service as a volunteer fireman for Oak Tree Volunteer Fire Company where he achieved life status, a tradition began by his grandfather, father and carried on today by his son.

His passions included golf at which he was a master. He closed many a deal at Metuchen Golf & Country Club and enjoyed good times with great friends at Scotch Meadows Country Club. His love of the outdoors continued into the woods as an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a 3rd generation member of Metuchen Rod and Gun Club and also served as president. He has many trophies to tell the stories from the golf course and the woods. He was a true Jack of All Trades but above all, a loving brother, a faithful husband, beloved father and grandfather and the epitome of a gentleman.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nell Rose Graham Kirkpatrick of the home; his daughter, Mary Austin Kirkpatrick Goodwin (Tommy) of Ellerbe, his son, Samuel Graham Kirkpatrick (Karen) of Milford, NJ, his brother, S. Roger Kirkpatrick of Marietta, OH and his grandchildren whom he adored and cherished, Hailey Austin Goodwin Gardner (Bennett), Stephanie Britt Kirkpatrick, Kyle Thomas Goodwin, Benjamin James Kirkpatrick, Samuel Keith Kirkpatrick and many loved nephews and nieces.

Funeral services to celebrate his life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6th at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Rev. Tracy Gross. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Richard Boles Funeral Service.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, for memorial donations to be given to the Calvary Baptist Church, Scotland Regional Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.
