Obituary

Eva Mae Smiling Chavis, age 68 of Maxton passed away at her home surrounded by family on January 23, 2018.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Union Light Baptist Church with burial following in the Smiling Family Cemetery.

Eva was a daughter of the late Leon L. Smiling and Eula Mae Brooks Smiling born at home on May 9, 1949. She was the loving and devoted wife to the late Martin Vernon Chavis, Sr. She dedicated her life to loving and caring for her family as a homemaker and enjoyed cooking many years at General McArthur’s Restaurant. She served the Lord as a member of Union Light Baptist Church. Eva enjoyed playing Bingo, being a scanner bandit and watching her stories. Her greatest joy was sharing time with her family, especially with her grandchildren. To her family, Eva was a wonderful mother, the world’s greatest NaNa, a precious sister, loving aunt and friend who will forever be missed.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Spencer Smiling and Leon L. Smiling, Jr.

Eva leaves behind her children, Annette C. Gooselin and husband Clint of Laurinburg, Martin Chavis, Jr., and wife Rebecca of Maxton, Martin Kenneth “Kenny” Chavis and wife Ashley of Maxton, Terry Chavis and wife Christy of Gibson; three brothers, William Smiling (Myrtle), Billy Ray Smiling (Mary), Donald Lee Smiling (Lisa) and eight sisters, Martha Lee Hunt (Jim Hunt), Naomi Brayboy (Rev. William “Bill” Brayboy), Linda Ann Scott (Donnie Scott), Brenda Locklear (Alfred Locklear), Barbara Strong, Rosa Lee Jones (Harold Jones), Sharlene Spaulding (Timmy Spaulding), Margie Smiling; eleven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and a host of loving family and friends.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday January 26th at the Union Light Baptist Church, 259 Union Light Church Road, Maxton.
