Obituary

Gwyn Hutchinson Harris, age 77 of Laurinburg passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018.

Gwyn, the only child of the late LeGrande and Eloise Gillis Hutchinson was born July 23, 1940 in her home on the property of the present Laurinburg First United Methodist Church. She finished Valedictorian in the Laurinburg High School Class of 1958. She loved dancing as a child of the 30’s and 40’s big band dance generation and studied dance into college as a performing member of the Duke University Modern Dance Club. She choreographed her dance performance for the Miss North Carolina Beauty Pageant of 1960 as the Miss Laurinburg Contestant. One of the first females enrolled at Duke University, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in 1960 where she was on the Dean’s List and president of Alpha Psi Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She then completed her Master’s Degree at Pembroke State University. Gwyn taught literature and writing for more than 30 years at Scotland High School, Richmond Community College and University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Gwyn loved animals and served on the Scotland County Humane Society Board of Directors for many years. She was always active in the community serving in many capacities. She enjoyed history and served as an officer and board member of the Scotland County Genealogy Society joining many of her teachers and other educator and history enthusiast as they worked on the editorial of the Scotland County Heritage Book. Gwyn then spent ten years at the John Blue House sharing history with young and old tourist.

As a retired senior citizen of the community, Gwyn became more active to support and visit schools. She joined the Silver Scots and became a member and officer of the Young at Heart Club and participated in the Scotland County Senior Games. She won medals both locally and at the state games in Raleigh. She was also an award winning Poet and essay writer. She served as a faithful longtime member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church and loved spending time with her family.

Gwyn is survived by her sons, Alton “Terrell” Harris, Jr. and wife Dawn of Wagram, Fredrick “Rick” Hutchinson Harris and wife Donna of Wagram and daughter, Marlena Joan Gilmore and husband Patrick of Laurinburg; her grandchildren, Danielle Harris, Haleigh Cooper, Taylor Cooper, Heidi Chavis, Colby Chavis, Ethen Gilmore, Seth Gilmore and great grandchildren, Layla and Lola.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the Saint Luke United Methodist Church with burial following in Hillside Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Monday beginning at 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the Saint Luke United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
