Elizabeth Evans Morgan of Laurel Hill, NC passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024. Her ninety-eight years were lived thoughtfully and joyfully.
Lib was born to J. Browne and Alfreda Evans on August 12, 1925, the youngest of five children. She grew up in St. Pauls, NC. The Evans were a family of storytellers. Throughout her life, Lib entertained her children and grandchildren with vivid tales of her childhood.
After graduating from high school, Lib continued her education, receiving her BA in childhood education at Woman’s College of UNC in Greensboro. She subsequently taught first grade in Raleigh, NC before moving to the Teacherage in Laurinburg to continue her career. At that time, Lib’s brother, Bill Evans, encouraged her to meet “a very nice young man” he’d played jazz with at Davidson College. Jimmy Morgan, a Scotland County native who was finishing up his war-interrupted college degree at UNC Chapel Hill, occasionally returned to Laurinburg to visit friends on weekends. Upon meeting Bill’s sister Lib, the frequency of these visits increased drastically.
Lib married Jimmy on July 2, 1949. After a honeymoon in Bermuda, she moved with him to his childhood home in Laurel Hill. She reveled in the beauty of her surroundings. Lib liked to laugh about those earliest days – struggling g to make scuppernong jelly, hooking an enormous bass and triumphantly shooting rows of tin cans off logs.
Lib and Jimmy raised four children and were active in Church in the Pines Presbyterian Church in Laurel Hill. No longer teaching school, Lib continued to be passionate about education. In her later years she received an honorary doctorate from Montreat College. She also worked in the ministry of her church in virtually every capacity. Deeply insightful and empathetic, Lib counselled many people informally and taught by example. She was beloved by her children, her church family, and her community.
Lib is survived by her children: Pat Morgan, of Surf City, NC; Jim (Annette) Morgan of Laurinburg, NC; Kay (Skip) Anderson of Greensboro, NC; and Sue Farrell of Laurel Hill, NC. She leaves behind grandchildren Arden (Troy) Niles, Kim (Gavin) Bullard, Chloe Gossage, Melody (Janus) Sorensen, Mindy (Fernando) Mejia, Matthew (Hannah) Morgan, Evan Anderson, Florica Anderson, Colin (Emma) Anderson, Charley Farrell and Willow Farrell. In addition, she leaves behind beloved great-grandchildren Veda Bullard; Rose & Violet Niles; Maddie, Tabitha & Matthew Gossage; Anna, Silvia & Louisa Sorensen; Ezra, Ethan, Luca & Micah Mejia; Miles Morgan; Ronan Anderson and Neal Farrell.
