Jack Oliver Abernethy, 92 of Laurinburg, passed away March 1, 2026 at Morrison Manor, after a short illness.
Jack was born in Scotland County, NC to Mrs. Annie Penny Abernethy and Elbert Clinton Abernethy.
In his boyhood years, Jack helped his dad deliver fuel for Harris Ice and Fuel. During his high school years, he was a football standout at Laurinburg High School. Upon graduation, Jack was drafted into the United States Army, and became a jumpmaster and instructor for Paratrooper school.
Upon discharge, Jack came back to Scotland County, and embarked on several careers. He was a small business owner and salesman for several companies. Among the most notable, he was a Scotland County Deputy Sheriff, assigned to the Scotland County jail.
In 1968 he met the love of his life, Anna “Dora” Ross. They were married in 1971 and were married until her passing in 2025.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna “Dora” Abernethy; parents, Annie Penny Abernethy and Elbert Clinton Abernethy; and daughter, Phyllis Abernethy Davis. Also preceding his are several siblings, Frances Herndon, Alleen McFadyen, and Dorothy Zielinski.
Left to cherish his memory is daughters, Lynn Abernethy Jones (Graham) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and Jacqueline Abernethy Ivey (Jack) of Bennettsville SC; grandchildren, Garrett Davis, Ross Davis, Walker Davis and Bradley Jones; great-grandchildren, Andrew Davis, Hayden Davis, Phillip Ross Davis, Cameron Jones, Malcolm Jones; sister, Helen Burdell; son-in-law Andy Davis; and special feline companion, Don King.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Pastor David Fore. The interment service with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
The family will have a time of visitation prior to the service on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
